The Copenhagen Harbour Festival (Kulturhavn) is Copenhagen’s annual summer harbour festival that fills the city’s waterways with life and activity. The festival has over the past 14 years developed into the nation’s largest cultural harbour festival with over 100,000 visitors. The festival offers a new setting for cultural activities and unique experiences hosted by the city’s many cultural and sports associations. At the same time, the festival is a showcase for new creative cultural projects in and around the harbour. Kulturhavn has its main venue by the harbour at Islands Brygge but the festival has over the years expanded to cover many different areas in the harbour. With an aim of spotlighting Copenhagen as a cultural port city, the festival will gradually include the entire Copenhagen harbour!
An important consideration is that the poster must make an impact and that the poster would be used as a recurrent design on all marketing material, which places special demands on the flexibility of the design.
Considering the festival's multicultural activities and national impact, we decided to create a simple identity system in order to be placed in various applications. The poster depicts the festival's harbour locations, in an abstract and cubical way in order to be easily set in various ways with the water element and typography, dominating the poster's synthesis. As part of the Copenhagen's cultural heritage, the patterns in red are placed in contrast of the blue color in order to draw the attention of the viewer. For all the years that the festival has expanded through the harbour, this synthesis leaves the viewer's eye to fill and place more patterns as Kulturhavn's aim of spotlighting Copenhagenas a cultural port city and include the entire harbour.
